Introduction to SkillSelect in Australia migration for skilled professionals

SkillSelect is an Australian immigration program that connects talented overseas employees with Australian businesses. The system functions similarly to an online job board, connecting people with companies based on their abilities, skills, and requirements. Employers can assess abroad employees’ profiles and advise them to apply for a visa after answering questions about their background, history, and competencies. Furthermore, the Australian government may pressure them to apply for a visa.

Potential migrant workers must provide basic background information such as skills, English language fluency, and educational background. Based on this information, they may consider the applicant’s application for a visa under the GSM program.

This strategy also addresses regional skill shortages. Skilled workers are needed in most rural areas of Australia to fill local poverty. SkillSelect recommends such people to businesses (if the application specifies that they wish to be considered for rural jobs) if they meet the company’s requirements. The approach ensures that the skilled migration program satisfies Australia’s economic development needs.

How Does SkillSelect Work?

1. To submit their information to SkillSelect, applicants must complete an online form given by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

2. Applicants take a skill competency exam to assess their abilities, English language comprehension, and educational level.

3. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the visa category they wish to be considered.

4. Once the candidate is in the system, Australian companies or state and territory governments may encourage them to submit a visa application. It is the process of securing a nomination or sponsorship, which is required for most skilled worker visas.

5. The applicant needs to apply for a visa.

6. If your application is approved, you will be awarded a visa and can live and work in Australia.

Is there a point requirement to get accepted?

– A skilled work visa requires a minimum of 60 points.

– There is a 65-point minimum point requirement for Business Innovation visas.

Skilled Worker Visa Categories

For skilled professionals, there are eight visa categories available under SkillSelect. Each requires a specific skill set. The information below will help you learn about the different types of visas and the application process.

Skilled Worker Visa Categories

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

It is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers who have completed a points test. It is not necessary to have employer or family sponsorship, nor does it require official nomination from a state or territory. To apply, you must have an invitation as well as the following qualifications:

1. Nominate yourself for a position on the appropriate list of specialized professions.

2. You should not be over the age of 50.

3. Have a suitable skills assessment for that employment.

4. Be able to communicate in English.

5. You received the score mentioned in your letter of invitation based on the criteria in the points test.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

It is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers who have completed a points examination. However, it does require a nomination from a state or territory administration, as well as the following requirements:

1. Nominate yourself for a position on the appropriate list of specialized professions.

2. Have a skill evaluation done for that occupation.

3. You should not be over the age of 50.

3. You received the score mentioned in your letter of invitation based on the criteria in the points test.

4. Be fluent in English and have been nominated by a government agency in any Australian state or territory.

Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 489)

It is a four-year visa that allows qualified individuals to reside and work in certain areas of Australia. You must meet different standards depending on whether you apply through the invitation pathway or the extended stay method.

Temporary Work Skilled Visa (subclass 457)

This visa is valid for four years. It is important to have a sponsor present and work in the nominated profession.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

It is a visa that allows highly skilled workers to stay in the country indefinitely. The prerequisites are as follows:

1. You’ve been accepted by an Australian employer who suggested you.

2. Unless you are exempt, you are under the age of 50.

3. Unless exempt, you must meet the ability, credentials, and English language proficiency requirements.

4. Apply to the stream for which you have been nominated (the Temporary Residence Transition stream, the Direct Entry stream, or the Agreement stream)

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme Visa (subclass 187)

It is a permanent residency (migrant) visa for a skilled worker. It would be preferable if you also worked in regional Australia:

1. An authorized Australian employer has recommended me for a position in remote Australia (regional Australia does not include the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney, Wollongong, or Melbourne)

2. Applicants under the age of 50 unless you are exempt.

3. Unless you are excluded, you must meet the abilities, credentials, and English language proficiency standards.

4. Applicants need to submit an application for the stream they are selected: (the Temporary Residence Transition, Direct Entry, or Agreement Stream)

Business Talent (Permanent) Visa (subclass 132)

You can establish a new business or expand an existing one in Australia with an entrepreneur visa. You need to be selected by the state or territorial government agency and invited to the minister’s application. You must also be proficient in at least one of the following skills:

1. If you want to apply for the visa in the Significant Business History stream, you must have at least AUD1.5 million in business and personal assets and an annual business turnover of at least AUD3 million; OR you must have more than AUD1.5 million in business and personal support and an annual business turnover of at least AUD3 million.

2. Assume you want to apply for a visa in the Venture Capital Entrepreneur category. In that situation, you must have at least AUD1 million in venture capital investment to begin commercializing and developing a high-value firm concept.

Business Innovation and Investment (subclass 188)

The entrepreneur visa is for persons who desire to start a business or invest in Australia. A nomination by a state or territory government or an Australian agency is required, as is an invitation to apply from the Minister of Immigration and Border Protection.

SkillSelect will send you an invitation if you are invited to apply for a visa. After that, you will have 60 days from the invitation date to apply for a valid visa online before the invitation expires.

Applications submitted outside of this window will be deemed invalid, and you will be required to wait for another invitation before being eligible to apply. Because the online visa application system will utilize information from your EOI, you will not need to re-enter some information you have already submitted. Not everyone who submits an EOI will be invited to apply for a visa.

Applicants will not be notified of the status of your EOI or informed of the potential of obtaining an invitation.

Following each invitation round, the Department will publish the lowest points scoring points test mark that allows an EOI to be invited. This will give you an indication of your chances of being invited to the next round.

A Bridging visa cannot be granted by submitting an EOI, which is not a visa application. Your eligibility for Bridging access will only be considered once you have submitted a valid visa application.

Before you are invited to apply for a skilled visa, if you are already in Australia and your visa is about to expire, you will need to apply for another visa to stay. If you do not meet the requirements for a new visa, you must leave Australia before your existing visa expires.
