If you are a skilled workforce and looking to start a career in Australia, a skilled Visa is the best choice for you. With this visa type, you can study, live, and work in Australia endlessly and will be eligible for a permanent visa

What is a Skilled Visa?

A skilled Visa is intended for workers with some skills, which Australia needs. If you get a Skilled Visa, you can live permanently anywhere in Australia. Although there are numerous types of skilled visas, most are based on point-based Systems to select who will be assigned this visa among all its candidates. Normally, a Skilled Visa is applied for the following visa types:

  1. Skilled Independent(Subclass 189) Visa
  2. Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa
  3. Skilled Regional/ Provisional (Subclass 489) Visa
  4. Skilled Work Regional/ Provisional (Subclass 491) Visa

Who Are Eligible To Apply For A Skilled Visa?

Mostly, this type of Visa is Invite Only. It means you are eligible for a Skilled Visa only if you are invited to apply. To be qualified to receive an invitation, you need to meet the following requirements:

You must provide evidence that you have a suitable Skill Assessment, which was gained three years before the date of invitation.

Your profession, recognized through the Skill Assessment, needs to be listed in the skilled occupation list. However, the list may differ in types of skilled visas.

  • Age needs to be under 45 years before you receive the Invitation.
  • You need to have Competent English Test Results(6 in each IELTS band or equivalent in any other language test)
  • The minimum eligible points are 65 points.
  • It would help if you met the health and character criteria.
  • It would help if you did not bear any dept from the Australian Government.
  • It would help if you did not have a history of visa canceled or application refused

Which Type Of Skilled Visa Should I Apply For?

To apply for a skilled visa that is most fit for you, it is essential to understand the difference between visas. Generally, a Skilled Visa is classified into two categories:

Permanent Visa

A permanent Visa like a Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) Visa and Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa means that you can live, stay, and work in Australia permanently once a visa is issued.

Provisional Visa

Provisional Visa like Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 489) and Skilled Work Regional(Subclass 491) Visa can grant you a period to stay and work in Australia temporarily.

Furthermore, each visa has its distinct requirement for its candidates. Don’t forget to check the requirements mentioned on the Department of Home Affairs(DHA) official website. You need to seek a visa.

For 190 Skilled Nominated Visa, it is required for candidates to be specified by the Australian Government or Territory Government Agency.

For 489 Skilled Regional Visa and Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 489) Visa, you need to be nominated by the Australian State or Territory or sponsored by an eligible relative. Additionally, you can live, work, and study in particular regional areas of Australia for the past two years.

For Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) Visa, you don’t need to be nominated by Stare or Territory. But it would help if you scored higher than the other types of visas to be invited.

Step-by-Step Process to Apply for a Skilled Visa

Since Skilled Visa is an Invite-Only type of visa, you must have an invitation to apply, so to get an invitation from the Australian Government, you need to submit an Expression of Interest via the Skill Select System to notify the Australian Home Affairs Department that you want to apply for this visa.

  1. Prepare all the required documents that support your claim to make in EOI, also evidence that you can meet the eligibility criteria of the visa you are applying for

A Skilled Visa is dependent on a point-based System where points will be granted to you if you hold specific skills. The least number of scores you need to hold to be eligible for receiving an invitation is 65.

But, this point does not guarantee you will receive an invitation as other candidates may have a higher score. Additionally, you will be competing with other candidates for a limited number of invitations, normally allotted to the applicants with the highest score.

How to achieve higher points?

Types of Skilled Visa
  • Educational Qualification
  • Age
  • English Proficiency Test Results
  • Skilled Employment Experience
  • Professional Year Program in Australia

Comparing Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) Visa, Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190), and Skilled Regional (Subclass 489/491) Visa provides additional points to their candidates. Why Target Regional Areas of Australia?

Why Target Regional areas of Australia

What are the Regional areas of Australia?

The Department of Home affairs has categorized parts of Australia into three groups to make it easier for international students to understand the new addition to the regional area put into effect from November 2019.

  1. Major cities

Some of the major cities in Australia are Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. These are overly crowded center points of the country. Due to overpopulation, the government decided on distributing the population evenly to the regional part of the country.

  1. Cities and Major Regional Centres

This area includes Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Wollongong, Illawarra, Geelong, Hobart, etc. Overseas students applying for this area are suitable for a year of post-work Visa even after their studies completion.

  1. Regional Areas and Other Regional Centres

This area includes all other locations other than the major cities and major regional centers. Overseas students applying for this area are suitable for an additional two-year post-work Visa even after the completion of their course.

Target Regional Areas of Maximum Points

Australia has seen an immense increase in its population, mainly in the capital cities. One of the main reason is immigrants. Yearly many students from overseas migrate here for their further studies and remain in the country for a work opportunity. This very reason has overly populated the significant cities, including Sydney, Melbourne.

It has lead to several problems in finding employment opportunities. The minister of the population has directed the new incoming immigrants to the regional areas of Australia. There needs to be growth in the regional areas as well. It can be done by distributing the immigration population evenly over the regional places. It will provide opportunities for immigrants along with the development of that area.

Some of the regional areas of Australia include Perth, Gold Coast, Darwin, Tasmania, Adelaide, etc.

There are various renowned universities located here in the regional area so that you don’t miss any chance.

Benefits of living in regional areas of Australia

Earn Points for PR

Living in the regional areas of Australia will benefit you in many ways. One of the many reasons includes your chance of earning extra 5 points. This five-point can prove to be of great importance while applying for your permanent residency. Greater the points you earn higher will be the chance for you to achieve your PR goals.

Post Study Work Visa

Another benefit of staying in a regional area includes a post-work-study visa. This Visa has been made official by the Australian government for those overseas students studying in the regional area. They will be provided with an extra year of post-study work after the completion of their course. This Visa will allow them to work full-time even after they have completed their studies.

Scholarship Scheme

There are various scholarship schemes provided by universities and the government itself to attract international students in regional areas. You need to properly research how to apply for these schemes and get benefits from them. Before choosing a course you want to study, you might as well enquire about its scholarship availability.

You will need to provide genuine documentation to validate your scholarship reason. You can also contact your agent regarding the scholarship process and check if you meet the criteria as mentioned.

Cost of Living

There is a great difference between regional and city areas living expenses.

The city area is usually expensive and crowded with people. The rent one pays in the city area can go up to $2644.73 per month whereas, in a regional area like Gold Coast, rent per month is $1883.33 for a one-bedroom apartment.

Relaxed Life Style

Regional areas are usually less crowded and therefore have less workload as compared to the busiest crowded cities. Just because the area is termed as regional doesn’t mean it is not developed.

Regional areas are too well developed with most of the basic facilities available 24/7. You can enjoy a relaxed way of lifestyle away from the hustle of the big crowded city.
